Are there any health concerns in using fiberglass insulation, and then not covering it?

I have some uncovered fiberglass insulation in basement ceiling, and some more in both walls and ceiling of a small shed.

Thanks.

  1. There is a lot of dust released by fiberglass, which can get lodged in the lungs.  At a minimum, cover it with a plastic vapor barrier.  This willl encapsulate the fibers.  Hope this helps.

  2. Careful with covering the fiberglas insulation with plastic or another material which may trap moisture. Covering the insulation can trap moisture in the insulation, which will have several consequences.

    1. The effectiveness of the insulation will be reduced as moisture loads up the fibers and reduces the air space which gives most of the insulating value.

    2. The trapped moisture will saturate the insulation to a point where it will start to penetrate wall, ceiling, or flooring material. Over time this will promote the growth of mold and mildew.

    3. The accumulated moisture will wick into the framing members and the material covering the framing members. The moisture saturating the framing will begin to decay or rot the wood. This is also an open invitation to termites, carpenter ants and other wood destroying organisms.

If you feel that you need to cover the insulation then do so with the proper material and methods, cover with sheetrock or perhaps paneling. As far as health issues fiberglass is considered to not be much of a concern. If needed you can always wear a dust mask when working in any areas where you may be exposed to the material. I usually wear a particulate filtering mask whenever I am working in an area that is dusty.

  3. don't worry about ..we never cover it in the uk
