Question:

Are there any hedgehogs native to New Jersey?

I was a little surprised when I startled a small creature that appeared to be a hedgehog. I didn't think there were any around here. I know there are probably porcupines, but I could have fit that thing in my hands.

Is it someone's pet or is it just a wild creature? If it is a pet, what can I lure it in with? We have hawks around here so I don't think it would last long if it was domesticated.

  1. Wow! I looked on the list of native wildlife, and NJ has a LOT!

Hedgehogs are not on the list. A small hedgehog is likely an escaped or released pet.

I used to have a pair of hedgehogs (Pygmy) and they were fun pets. They require a lot of specialized care, though>

I doubt that a hawk would harm one, as they do have/make spines when they are threatened. My hands(skin) are allergic to them, so I had to use thin gloves.

wikipedia states none are native to North America>

I'm sorry to forget to answer the 'lure it in' part.

They love cottage cheese and mill worms and quality cat kibble.

  2. I went to a place where there were 2 :D one flipped over (poor thing) so we got help

was it in your yard? you should set a trap (not to kill it but to catch it)

(remember we live in the same state ;)
