I have recently taken my son (11years) out of school to teach him at home. I am looking for a social network to join/set up for my son and myself to become part of. Does anyone know of any social networks available. Also, I would like some additional information regarding home education.

I already know about Education Otherwise which have been very useful, but I would also like information and communication on a smaller scale, especially from people in the South Norfolk or North Suffolk area.

  1. If you're looking for your son to socialise then you should not have taken him out of school in the first place.

  2. Try asking the Education Department of Norfolk County Council if they can put you in touch with similiar families.

Or put a notice up in your local library(s).

  3. If you join the Home Education Advisory Service (£15 pa) they will send you, amongst other things, a list of home-education families in your area. www.heas.org.uk

As you have looked at EO, you will probably be aware of the legal requirements etc. but Norfolk County Council should have some Elective Home Education officers who you can contact for advice on anything really.  They cannot force you to teach anything in particular, or tell you how to teach, but once you have decided how and what you want to do, they can be very helpful. Our lady in Gloucestershire is very good.

Oh, also, ignore anyone who harps on about "socialisation" - it is a fallacy.  My daughter (13) has a much busier social life now then when she was at school!  A bit TOO busy for my liking:-)

    Very best of luck

BTW, I have just added you to my contacts.  Although I live in Gloucs.  My ex-husband lives in Ipswich and my daughter goes to stay with him twice a year.  She would like to meet other HE children during her visits

  4. EO contact list will have home schoolers in the area. Also you could mabye try the Home Education Advisory Service.

How do you want to set it up? Would it just be general meetings or would you want to do it around visits or group activities? I used to do that as a kid. I'm afraid I can help you it's not my local area but there are cotact lists out there. And you could just set up a meeting, promote it in a newsletter and see who comes. Even just a coffee morning to meet new people.
