  1. The Well Trained Mind recommends kids do logic and rhetoric, then practise it by joining their local debate team. In my family, that isn't necessary :)

  2. There sure is, and they have chapters in many, if not most states.

We have a state wide chapter, and local groups.

Check out their web site at http://www.ncfca.org

If there is not a chapter in your state, get the information to start one.

If this is not what you are looking for try your local 4H extension office, they can direct you to Toastmasters; a speech and debate program that has a high school level component as ll.

    Hope this helps a bit.

  3. For the debate side, try Memoria Press Traditional Logic and Rhetoric curricula along with a book on Robert's rules of order.  The best way to learn how to debate is to join a debate team, but these can get you started.

For speech, the best thing you can do is practice. Look for opportunities to speak in front of others. Video tape your self practicing your speeches so that you can see how you look and sound to your listeners and correct nervous habits. Ask others for their honest evaluation of your performance.

  4. I'm homeschooled and I am taking a Speech and Debate class right now at the hs organization I am a part of.  You can likely find one in your area, or use curriculum from Bob Jones, Abeka, etc.

  5. Hello,

We were involved in a home school co op in our area when my daughter was in speech. That way she got the practice of being in front of a room full of people, not just me. The lady who facilitated it was wonderful and the kids took a field trip to DC where they did their speeches on different historical venues out in front of total strangers! Even tour guides where complementing our kids.

I would definitely seek out a group to study this with, it was well worth it.

  6. the ABeka program teaches speech...

they have a speech video course, as well.

    hope this helps!!

    :)
