  1. Are you asking for yourself Jessica?

I gather from your Q&A that you're quite young, perhaps still in school - forgive me if I'm wrong.

Breast cancer is mainly a disease of ageing; 80% of those diagnosed with it are over 50, it's rare in women under 40 and almost unheard of in under 25s.

The American Cancer Society and other cancer organisations recommend that women start regular breast self-examination at the age of 20.

Perhaps you are asking for someone else? Early breast cancer usually has no symptoms. Possible signs of possible breast cancer are:

change in size - one breast may have become noticeably larger or lower

nipple change - if it becomes inverted (pulled in) or changes its position or shape

rash - on or around the nipple

discharge - from one or both nipples

puckering or dimpling - around nipple

swelling – in your armpit or around your collarbone (from lymph nodes)

lump or thickening - that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue - BUT remember that most breast lumps are not cancerous

  2. Knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer may help save your life. When the disease is discovered early, you have more treatment options and a better chance for a cure.

Most breast lumps aren't cancerous. Yet the most common sign of breast cancer for both men and women is a lump or thickening in the breast. Often, the lump is painless. Other potential signs of breast cancer include:

        * A spontaneous clear or bloody discharge from your nipple, often associated with a breast lump

        * Retraction or indentation of your nipple

        * A change in the size or contours of your breast

        * Any flattening or indentation of the skin over your breast

        * Redness or pitting of the skin over your breast, like the skin of an orange

A number of conditions other than breast cancer can cause your b*****s to change in size or feel. Breast tissue changes naturally during pregnancy and your menstrual cycle. Other possible causes of noncancerous (benign) breast changes include fibrocystic changes, cysts, fibroadenomas, infection or injury.

If you find a lump or other change in your breast — even if a recent mammogram was normal — see your doctor for evaluation. If you haven't yet gone through menopause, you may want to wait through one menstrual cycle before seeing your doctor. If the change hasn't gone away after a month, have it evaluated promptly.

  3. This is an unscientific reply, but approved by my doctor!  He says he always listens to his female patients, so when I went to him as I was sure I had cancer.  Even though I had no symptoms - he insisted on sending me off for a mammogram.

And when I had this, there were some suspicious signs, so after a biopsy it was confirmed that I did have breast cancer, which was caught very, very early on.

So follow all the information on websites and given you by medics - but also if you somehow feel there is something wrong, don't dismiss your feelings.
