  1. I would hope not, but I don't really know

  2. Well, it's not a question of whether the agencies will let you adopt, but more what the guidelines are for the countries those agencies serve.

We adopted both of our kids in China. China used to allow people of older ages to adopt, but has become stricter about this recently.

Today, you have to be under 49 to adopt a child under 2, but I think you can still adopt under 55 if you want to adopt an older child or a child with special needs.

However the wait to adopt a child from China has grown so long that I wouldn't recommend that anyone begin the adoption process right at this time. Perhaps this will change in the future, but there are no signs of the wait getting shorter any time soon.

There are other countries with less stringent guidelines about age. The trick is, to find an agency that deals with those countries and get a good idea of which countries will allow an older parent to adopt.

I believe Ethiopia will allow people to adopt up to age 55. Perhaps it is the same in Nepal, as well. (Though I know someone who adopted in Nepal, and the process was made much more difficult by the political turmoil in that country!)

  3. There are thousands of normal older kids in orphanages around the world who are eligible for adoption by older couples.

Under Colombian law, you have to be under 35 [waivable by the Colombian family agency, I.C.B.F.] to adopt an infant or child under age 2.

We actively help couples adopt older kids - up to age 15 in some instances, usually ages 7 to 12. Our oldest couple adopting were both age 64 and they adopted a wonderful 15 year old girl. Because of the age of the girl and the stability of this family, the ages of the adopting parents did not become an issue.

If you are interested KidSave has a program called "Summer Miracles" in which they bring eligible kids to the USA to live with host families and hopefully find families to adopt them.

    Worth looking into.

  4. Yes, it's more country guidelines.

Have you considered adopting in the US? There are many children (of varying nationalities) that would love you call you parents!

there is a HUGE list of children wanting to have a home and family. Just look at their faces.

  5. Ugh, I hope not.  That's getting pretty old to begin parenting, unless maybe you're seeking teenagers.

Adoptees suffer quite a lot of loss as it is. Should we also expect them to bear the burdens of elderly parents?
