I'm flying to Austin to pick up a car I'm buying, but my license is suspended... i want to make sure that there isn't any checkpoints on the way back. I've been told that there is one on the way over to Austin, but I've been told that there is none on the way back... is this true? Please, only people that have taken this drive and know the facts need reply.

  1. The U.S. Border Patrol Checkpoint in Sierra Blanca only checks people coming out of El Paso. All they ask is if you are an American Citizen (Just say, "yes"). If you are going from Austin to El Paso, you don't go through the check point.

As far as driving with a suspended license, be really careful. Don't try to push your luck with the speed limit. It is 75 along HWY 290 from Austin to the I-10 junction, and along I-10 up to the El Paso county line it is actually 80mph. So stick to the speed limit.

The biggest speed trap is in Pecos county in the vicinity of Fort Stockton. If you have to push the speed limit, Don't Do It There!

Also, to avoid getting pulled over, make sure all your signals, taillights, headlights and license plate lights are working before you leave Austin.

Seriously, they will arrest you if you have a suspended license or you are driving without your insurance card.

  2. all you have to do is show them an american passport or DL, they're only concerned with catching illegals

  3. Yes, there is a checkpoint outside of el paso in Sierra Blanca, it applies for anyone traveling either way on Interstate 10.

They ask for your license at the very least.  If it's really busy and there is a lot of traffic you might get lucky and not have to stop at all, but since I don't live there and have only passed through a few times I can't tell you how often that happens.
