Apart from Auckland, are there any large stretches of motorway of 3 lanes or more each side? Or is it mainly single and dual carriage way?

Thanks

  1. yes I believe apart from Auckland and the Hutt Valley motorway most other motorways are single or dual

the link below is also from wikipedia and it goes into details about all the motorways in NZ

There are Streets and Avenues in the main centres that are 3 or 4 lanes wide i.e Moorhouse Avenue, Fitzgerald Avenue and Bealey Avenue in Christchurch. Of course these are just at a 50km speed limit

  2. Officially a motorway is a fast through road designed for use by motor vehicles only.

No bikes, horses, pedestrians, skateboards and the like.

Auckland has the longest stretches of motorway, and Wanganui has the shortest stretch.

Most major cities have either a motorway or a bypass system.

  3. There's some 3 lane motorways in Wellington and Hutt Valley.  See links below for more info.

  4. all the main centres have motorways in them

  5. It depends how far you are talking about. North of Auckland the motorway is now three lanes for about 15 kilometres, then becomes dual to Orewa, which is about 68 kilometres.

From here the road has sections where it is 2 lanes each way but mostly single lane although there are plenty of passing lanes as you travel north.

Going south there are parts that are two lanes and parts that are three as far as Bombay Hills, then going through toward Hamilton mostly dual lanes as far as Huntly. it is quite a quick trip to Hamilton now.

    Hope that helps
