Question:

Are there any laws that require high schools to allow students to take two science classes in one year?

I am trying to add a second science class (Physics) in addition to Chemistry AP. The counselors say that there are 6-7 seats open in Physics, but the assistant principal refuses to give them to students with already one science. Is there any law that forces schools to give the open seats to students? I have tried asking nicely and respectfully, but they refuse. Guidance counselors say that the University of California recommends students take biology, chemistry, and physics in high school.

  1. In the school district in which I teach it is very common for students who take AP Chemistry to take physics concurrently.

Usually this is at the discretion of the school district as I am not aware of any laws mandating a district to allow enrollment in two sciences.

Try again with your principals with more "evidence" (Letters of support from a college admissions official or neighboring school districts). If your attempts to respectfully convince your principal to allow your dual science enrollments fail then you may need to show your superintendent or school board on why you should be able to do so.

Best of luck in your attempts.
