Question:

Are there any mountain/std. bikes that can handle a Really Tall, Really Heavy (though healthy) rider?

Currently I have my 26" 12 yr old full aluminum full suspension bike that "cries" when I try to ride it. I used to be a frequent biker (Freestyle and mountain bike) when I was young and in my teens, but I outgrew both over time.

I am very active, and used to run frequently and play sports. Currently I'm a semi-pro football player, but Ive done some damage to my knee and leg, and my doctor told me not to run for a while, but to try a lower impact sport like bike riding.

I'm 6' 9" and 360 lbs, but healthy. Much higher than the frequent "tall" and "Heavy" riders I've seen questions asked by.

I did go into the two bike stores I know of in the area. One tells me that any bike would work and I know just enough to tell he knew squat. Second store told me They probably couldnt help me. I'm willing to drive to a decent shop (1.5 hr) if there is any hope!

are there any bikes or settups that can work with someone my size? I prefer a mt. Bike to do light dirt trails with my wife.

  1. I would DEFINITLY stay away from aluminum, go steel for someone your size, but for strength safety and ride comfort. Look into Surly's. They actually tout their frames with the FFF "fatties fit fine" becausse they are so strong and comfortable for bigger guys. i know a 6'3", 380 lbs who rides his surly everyday and LOVES it

  2. Ditto on the Surly.

I'm 6'7", 240.  I have a Surly single-speed myself.  I also have a Gary Fisher Paragon in 21".  Serious fun.  You can buy the same frame on the Gary Fisher Cobia, but the upgrade in components would cost you more than the difference in the price of the bikes.

There are other good mtbs out there.  I just have experience with Fishers.

Yes, please, your intuitions are good.  Drive to a reputable shop.

PS...You might consider a custom build.  Look at www.zinncycles.com  He specializes in big guys.  When I say big, I mean 7'2", 300+ Bill Carmichael.  Zinn built him a road bike, makes mine look small.  And there are other builders around.

Also, check out Tom Teesdale at http://www.tetcycles.com/Who_is_Tom_/who...  This guy has built prototypes for other companies, and has built bikes for national level racers.  Look around for a builder like him.  Again, ask at your bike shop.  Have them do the final assembly.  It's worth it for guys our size, I guarantee.
