  1. Nearly every college in the world has some sort of music program. Some are more prestigious than others- Juilliard, Eastman, and the Boston Conservatory, to name a few. (Don't worry, not all are in the Northeast.) The Ivy Leagues, if you have good enough grades and test scores (especially Yale and Cornell, where I applied), also have great music programs along with tough academics. Look around in your state, for starters. I applied to about 6 colleges/universities in my home state (Georgia), after "shopping around" and speaking with students already in the music programs. Then I set my sights on a few out-of-state schools (mostly "dream schools", like the Ivy Leagues I already mentioned.).

Most (if not all) colleges require an audition. This means they expect two or three pieces of (usually) classical music, in more than one language if you can. There may be a theory test, a piano proficiency test, and a sight reading test. An interview concerning your music prospects is also possible.

Some colleges make you go through a sort of "first round" of auditions before you can actually audition. Juilliard and Yale have this. You send in either a video-recording of your music, or a CD recording of your music. If they like you, they will set up a second audition where you visit the school.

In preparation for auditions and your freshman year, you should get as much singing experience as possible. Take chorus in high school. Take AP Music Theory. Take (if you can) private voice. DEFINATELY study piano. I cannot stress how much piano helps you sing. Sight read everything. Work out harmonies with the radio. If you like Broadway musicals, watch them. If you like choral music, attend concerts. If you like opera, go see some operas. Then return home and read up on the composers, the pieces, and the performers. This will help you with your classes (because you will have more basis for examples), the auditions (it will show you are interested), and it will also help you decide if you really ARE interested.

A side note: your academics help too. ;) Good luck!
