Are there any negative effects from using a cord that came with an iPod nano with my iPod touch?

No, they're the same USB cord basically, except that the older ones have the tabs on the sides that you have to squeeze to remove it from the iPod.  The connectors and pins inside are all the same, though, so it's no problem at all.

No all ipods use the same usb cord except for the shuffle

Not if the cord is the same. There are no effects because I use my friend's cord sometimes and she has a diff iPod. Nothing with happen. Its like if you have a Dell laptop charger and you use it to charge a Apple Macbook. Hope this helps!
