Without a doubt.  BUY THIS BOOK:  "Writers Market 2008"  It is for sale at all major book stores and lists every publishing company along with contact information, what stories they take, who they take them from and how to submit them.  If you want to publish anything this is THE source to get started.  If you start to get a lot of acceptances it even lists agents for hire.  Good Luck!

Not very many newspapers will publish short stories or poetry.  A few might in a Sunday magazine section, so check to see if anything similar to what you write is ever published there.

Magazines offer much better opportunities in this area.  Go to your local library or bookstore and get a copy of the book called "Writer's Market."  It's updated every year.  It lists the names and addresses of *thousands* of magazines, most of which you've never heard of, and gives contact information, details on what kind of writing they're looking for, etc.
