Are there any nice sandy beaches?

My sisters and I are going to San Francisco at the end of September. What beaches do you recommend in that area, and is it warm enough to actually go swimming and sunbathe? I just want one day at the beach!

  1. There are some gorgeous beaches at Bodega Bay and also at Point Reyes north of San Francisco.  The water is very cold (I'm not sure of the temperature but I would think you would need a wetsuit).  Although if you can take it at 60 you might be able to do it!

Have fun, these are really beautiful places to see!

Bodega Bay is about 1 1/2 hours north of SF.  Take 101 to Hwy 1 at Petaluma.

  2. Congratulations! You are choosing one of the most fog free times for San Francisco.  There are beaches.  One on the west side of the city is wide and sandy. However, the bad news-unless you are a polar bear or penguin, most people find it way too cold to swim in the waters off San Francisco without a wet suit.  But do enjoy the beach!

By teh way, there are also smaller beaches in SF, but they are more difficult to get to
