Question:

Are there any old watchtowers in the US?

I remember when I was little, my family and I walked to the western end of a beach, away from the part where people could swim. We were the only ones there. The whole place was overgrown with weeds, the sand turned to pebble, and there was a lot of junk lying in the water (old broken ships and stuff).

There was also something called a watchtower? A tall wooden building with no obvious way in. It looked ancient and abandoned. Some distance away from it I found the entrance, it was a stone/metal, really heavy "lid" that you'd have to lift somehow to get underground and to the tower.

I just don't remember where it all was, except it was in the western part of the US. Does this ring any bells to anyone? Can anyone tell me the exact location, and more info about the building?

  1. There are still World War II watchtowers in Delaware.  Except these are tall cylinders made out of cement with a staircase up the middle.  Their original purpose was for soldiers to look for n**i submarines trying to get into Delaware Bay and then up to the naval yard in Philadelphia.  There aren't as many left as when I was a child.

There is one you can still climb up at Cape Henlopen State Park near Lewes.
