Are there any options for a diabetic person to eat cake?

Hello! recently my mom was diagnosticated with diabetes type 2, she's been doing good and everything, but I know she loves sweets and I been thinking what I'm gonna do for her birthday cake, we always (past years, before we know about diabetes) buy her favorite cake, but I guess not anymore, however I would like to see if there are any options for her to still have some cake without hurting her health.

I think even a small slice of regular cake could be bad for her, so, are there any sugar free cakes available at local bakerys? I've asked a couple places but they say no, I also asked Basking robins without luck.

What options do I have so she can enjoy a cake again?

Thanks!

  1. You should try a specialty bakery...lots of places, especially organic / healthy places, have tons of cakes that are safe for diabetics.  Don't stick with Baskin Robbins, look for an organic bakery.

Otherwise, the grocery stores by me have a sugar free section near the health food.  They have cake mixes that are formulated with Splenda, so you could make one yourself.

  2. Find out from her how much carb she can eat at each meal, her doc should have told her that.  Let's say it's 35g...she could have a cupcake with icing, or a medium piece of angel food cake (not pound cake).  Or she could have 2 scoops of ice cream.  Just keep in mind that she can't eat a meal along with that, too.  That 35g has to be for the whole meal.  So maybe serve some veggies and dip, and maybe some deli meats and cheese as the "food" portion of the meal since they have barely any carbs.

Don't fall into the "sugar-free cake" trap.  There are lots of recipes for sugar free cake, but they have almost as much carb as the regular stuff, so Type 2's are often lured into thinking they can eat them without limitations.

  3. I looked for cakes in my "carb and calorie counter book" I don't know what her favorite cake is or the carbs she is allowed  for managing her diabetes. My limit is 30 for a snack between meals. Anyhow, a Pillsbury Moist Supreme French Vanilla or German chocolatelists 1/12 of the cake at 34 grams of carbs, that would b fine for me. If she has a favorite cake, let her have some, just watch the serving sizes and limit it.If you withhold it, she may overdo it later. try making it from scratch, substituting 1/2 the sugar with 1/2 Splenda Granulated.

  4. As long as your mother can figure out where to put the nutritional information on a regular piece of cake into her eating plan sugars are not forbidden to us any more. If she'd rather not eat regular cakes or sweets there are lots of recipe websites to check out for diabetic safe cakes and other baked goodies. I'll give ya a few good sites to look at.

My personal favorite is the dlife site. Hope you'll find some good help on one or more of these.

  5. My mom had diabetes.  She has had it for about 20 years.  When it comes to cake she can have angel food cake.  (HOME MADE)  and strawberries and whipped cream.  (HOME MADE)  just cream whipped.  There done.  It tastesAWESOME.  ENJOY.  :):):)
