Are there any orphanages?

I am starting a non-profit organization called Cold Children. I am going to send many knitted or crocheted or sewed scarves to homeless children in the world that are cold. I was wondering if anybody knows where I can find a list of orphanages in the USA? And how can I start this non-profit organization? Can you please give me a website. Is there already an organization like this

First, I applaud your decision.  I just want to suggest that you pick a country that is actually "cold", since you want to use the name "Cold Children."

My ex-wife belonged to a knitting group, that knitted hats, socks, gloves for children in Russia, who were orphans.  Reports were, they really loved them, and needed them to survive.

I'm not sure how much American orphans would appreciate "home-made" stuff, they are used to more fashionable clothing, and in America there are so many charities and 'thirft" stores full of clothes that are available for children who need clothing.

This resource (thrown away clothing)  is not available in many third world countries, because clothing is worn to a thread, then the threads are recycled into rugs, or other things.

You start a non-profit organization by contacting the secretary of state of your state, to file the "corporation" papers.

Yes, there are hundreds of knitting groups that make clothing for people in need, including one I've heard of that makes knitted liner caps for military personnel.
