My husband and I were discussing this yesterday. Do any other mammals menstruate? And do any have monthly breeding cycles?

  1. Of course. Though we like to think we are SO different we are pretty much all the same. After all, cats and dogs are menstruated. In fact, I'm pretty sure all mamals do get periods.

Most dogs get their menstruation every 6 months, but their gestational period is not as long as ours either. Thought the length of time varies, the "process" is mostly the same as ours.

I don't know about other species (such as primates) but I have a feeling that we're not the only ones in that boat ;)

  2. mammals great apes lesser apes canines etc.

  3. No other mammal female has a monthly menstruation cycles.  Most animals are seasonal breeders.  Like white-tailed deer that mate during winter.  Some mammal females, like polar bears, mate after they have raise cubs, every other year.  Primate females mate when the young are weaned or become juveniles or when a fetus is born still or the baby dies.

The bonobo is a sexually active chimpanzee.  This is a behavioral adaption for dominance and apparently to reduce the stress of survival.  However, the females do not go in to heat unless the baby is weaned.  Which is one to two years.

  4. I think all mammals do.  I once had a dog that would have to wear a diaper at her time cos she would spot on our rug.  I would think any animal that carries young to give live birth would have to have a menstrual cycle.  But I'm not a vet.

  5. Bonobo's
