  1. The standard is firewire because it is faster than USB.

400 mbps is the guaranteed speed of firewire.

480 mbps is the maxiumum speed of USB 2.0 which is NEVER attained. USB 2.0 actually operates between 300-320 mbps.

  2. USB cables or a card reader

  3. It depends on the camcorder and what you want to transfer...

MiniDV and Digital8 tape requires firewire for transferring DV/HDV (miniDV tape only).

Hard disc drive (HDD) and flash memory require USB. Flash memory can also use a card reader. Some JVC HDD camcorders use firewire.

DVD camcorders will use the computer's drawer loading DVD drive to rip the video...

Analog camcorders need an analog bridge that will connect to the USB or firewire port... depends which one you get and what your computer can do...

  4. I certainly wouldn't bother using USB for video transfer unless it's just for the web as the quality is terrible compared to doing it properly with Firewire. Apart from that there's the option of using an internal analogue capture card which will give you good quality if set up properly.

If it is just for the web you can buy horrible little USB capture devices on Ebay which take the RGB output and turn it to pooh...but on Youtube it won't matter as it will fit in perfectly.

    Best of Luck.
