We have made the decision to teach our 14 yo daughter at home.

It would be nice to make contact with other home educating parents.

  1. I haven't found a local support group that works with our family schedule, but my true support group is online.  Check out www.homeschoolspot.com - they have been an excellent source of encouragement.

  2. Definitely find a homeschool support group in your area. It is vital to have other homeschoolers to talk to face to face. They usually provide social activities as well, and co-ops will offer enrichment classes.

Another option is yahoo groups. A lot of groups use yahoogroups for their communication of events and news, but there are absolutely tons of groups that are just cyber groups. These are nice because you can talk to just about anyone at anytime and receive tons of support and encouragment.

  3. There are a lot of parents educating their children at home. Do a google seach on your state like __________(insert state name) homeschooling-and you should find tons of info on homeschooling in your area. :)

  4. my stepson was homeschooled by his mom and she did a lousy job.when he went back to public school,he was 2 grades behind and is still 1 grade behind.he doesn't do his homework and has been in alternative school because he wouldn't comply or his mom.i realize not all parents do this bad but there should be a test for parents to take to see if they qualify to teach at home!

  5. I began homeschooling my son in November 2006; he is now in 2nd grade.  I have not found a local homeschool support group that suits our needs, and my main source of support is online.  Also, I started an online group which has many links to free/low cost homeschooling curricula, help, etc.  The link is below:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/christianh...

Although the group's name is Christian Homeschool Support Group, it is open to all homeschoolers.

    I hope this is helpful.

  6. I homeschool my son and love it!  (Hence my username, lol)  I'm starting the 4th year of teaching my now-5th grade son at home, I promise it does get easier.  I wasn't quite sure if we were going to make it through that first year, lol...but it really is possible :-)

To a poster above who mentioned a 12yo who can't stand writing - check out IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing).  It looks a bit pricey at first, but is non-consumable and can be used easily from 3rd grade-high school.  You can find it at http://www.writing-edu.com/.

Welcome to the world of homeschooling!  Have fun!

  7. I may not be a parent...far from it actually...but my parents have been homeschooling me since the first grade. And ever since two years ago, my mom had been the one doing it all, but she took a job outside the home and my dad started homeschooling my brother and I. I'm 16 now and a Junior in high school (yep! I skipped my Freshman year). I wish you luck with your daughter! I know if I wasn't homeschooled, I wouldn't have as good of a relationship with my parents as I would have if I were still in public school...Home education is the best decision anyone can make...

  8. Yes 19 year veteran homeschooler.  You need some support in your area.  Look for a local support group at http://www.hslda.org or http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/inde...

Get connected and let the veterans help you with the many adjustments you will have.

Best to you and your daughter!!!

  9. There are more of us out there than you think. My name is Sherry I'm 39,my daughter is 15.E-mail ...wiccansherry@yahoo.com  ,  feel free to write.  Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

  10. I home school all of my children. I have one that graduated from an online school and now is attending a private university with scholarships. I have 2 other children that are currently being home schooled. We prefer the help of an online charter school that provides curriculum, the computer and teachers for free.

  11. yes i have just started teaching my 12 year old son at home this week, would be glad of ideas you may have on subjects as it is quite hard to teach them and make a record of what they have done. my son doesn't like writing so i am struggling to get him to record anything down on paper.

  12. I am an American living in Ireland six months out of every year.  As such we have decided the best route to educating our 11 year old son is homeschooling.  We've only started at the end of July, but so far all is going well.  We love the freedom of being able to plan which subjects are taught and how.  Please let me know if you have any questions, or just need moral support.  I'm happy to provide both!

The first thing I did was to talk to everyone I know who has ever home-schooled or knew anyone who home-schooled.  Looks like that's pretty much where you're at as well.  They can be an excellent source of information!  Networking is the most important part of homeschooling!  Find yourself one or several homeschooling organizations in your area (you will usually find several!).  There is no limit to how many support groups you can join, and frankly the more the merrier.  Usually they will provide activities for the parents, and the students to get together for various activities, extra classes (for subjects you are unable to fit into your regular curriculum).

The second step is to do a google search for "(enter your state name here) homeschooling"  This should give you a link to the laws of the state, the homeschooling types available (there are three in SC where I live in the states), and what is required of you by law.  My best advice, keep it simple.  Don't do any more than you absolutely have to or you will overwhelm yourself, and the child.

The third step for me was to figure out curriculum.  First you need to find out what subjects are required by the state (usually only math, science, english and social studies, but the higher grades have more).  From there I checked out what subjects would be available to him if he were to attend public school at home.  Once you've figured out what subjects you want to teach based on these things, and adding in whatever subjects you wish were available you can begin looking for curriculum sources.

Finding the right curriculum for you is easier than you might think.  There are tons of companies that basically do the work for you, providing all the student material/teacher workbooks, and lesson plans.  There are tons of online sources as well for various forms etc. that you can use.  The best thing about homeschooling is that you can basically do it however you want!

  13. We are, but instead of connecting with people who are perhaps thousands of miles away, why not find a more local group to connect with?  Try a web search for "Homeschool (your city or town)" and see what you get.  If you're in the US, you might see if your state organization has a list of local groups.

  14. Good for you. Feel free to contact me at ChildHomeAcademy@aol.com....my name is Robbin ( I love history and am a mom thus the name HistoryMom).. I have a 9 yr old girl who is in 3rd grade. I run a homeschool group (we are in Fl ) but you are welcomed to check it out...go to groups and look for Precious Child of Home Academy. We are a SMALL group, but I try to help whoever is interested even if it's just info.

Welcome home (where they all belong).
