Question:

Are there any other parents out there with disabled children that are getting a bad deal from Social Services,

If you have been successful in obtaining a reasonable care package, can you give me some clues how you did it? If not, I think that there should be a way that we can all voice our concerns together and ask for what we are entitled to. Our children are not normally disabled as a result of self abuse, or self inflicted dangers but people with drink/drug and aggressive behaviour have better access to support. Why?

  1. it would depend on the social services you are talking about, and if you qualify financially to receive those services distributed by the state. Your first step if financially able is to file for Social Security Supplemental Income on the Child. As long as he/she is entitled to SSI they receive Medicaid through the state. Next is to get your child's pediatrician to write prescriptions for certain services i.e. speech, physical or occupational therapy. There are also children's services available to them because of the disability, contact your state Health and Human Services to locate these offices. If you do not income qualify for SSI or Medicaid talk to the state office about the Waiver program, once you jump through the hoops some states more than others, your income will no longer count toward his / her medicaid qualification which in many cases will take a huge financial burden off of your family.

Some states will require a case manager be assigned to your child, usually this is a good thing, they will help you find the support, care, and services for your child. If your child is in school just simply remember no child left behind. Simply put the school is required by Federal Law to provide the best possible education for your child, even if it means footing the bill to send him/her to a facility able to do that.

Good luck, and hang in there, the help is out there just keep pushing.

  2. Sway: Are you going to go into some rant about tax payers money? Don't bother, no one is interested. Disabled people are entitled to a decent life, the same as anyone else and sometimes they need help and support to enable that.

You would probably be better off contacting newspaper to highlight your cause. My sister is coping with a similar problem at the moment and it's just a constant battle.

  3. and what are you "entitled" to?

You have kids, you must be prepared to take care of those kids.

  4. Ask for an interview with Social Services , preferably with a referral from your GP

If no success, consult your MP

  5. Most states are broken and have to cut back in social services. The money that is available is also, in part, going to illegals immigrant who are over using the system for which we all pay. Not to worry though, if Obama is elected everything will be free. Just be prepared to pay upward of 60% in federal, state and local taxes.
