Question:

Are there any other plants like currants and gooseberries that are outlawed in some U.S. states?

I am not asking about the obvious ones, like marijuana.

Are there any web sites that list what the agricultural planting restrictions are by state?

  1. Hi, I just googled "outlawed plants by state" and was given 470,000 hits, the first of which was "Carter Co Gop: Coal Fired Plants Being Outlawed". Having seen that, I almost fell out of my chair laughing.  Then I scrolled down and saw some actual species of plant listed, some by cities/counties.

In my locale, a neighbor planted a small willow tree about 10 feet or so from a storm line/drain.  I called the city code number and they said that planting such a tree was against the code but not a big problem until the tree's roots make it to the storm drain and cause a potential flood.  If only my neighbor had bothered to pick up the phone first.

That Willow tree is now taller than their two story home and it shouldn't be long before the roots eat through the storm pipe, the branches are already 5 feet over the pipe in diameter, not to mention in my yard!

And by the way, my hubby planted gooseberries/raspberries one year and after two years they got a tad out of control so we cut them down.  For at least three years, we kept getting new growth.  It's hard to get rid of them.

  2. rasberrys blackberrys willows pot some bamboo too

  3. All plants that are labeled as invasive are restricted by most states and the US Government. They are damaging to the environment and to native vegetation.

  4. http://plants.usda.gov/java/noxiousDrive...

It is a pretty big list.

The legal term is noxious weeds and it is illegal to cultivate and/or to allow them to grow.

  5. Currants/ gooseberries have been legal now in affected states for some time. They are the alternate host for white pine blister rust but the new varieties are resistant. They were lobbied into illegality by the wood industry but it is no longer a problem. Varieties of the opium poppy were developed with no alkaloids and those are now legal. Gotta have poppy seeds on those rolls. Some invasive plants were illegal but most are already here now and they will always be around. The only other items that I know of that are illegal is anything that is imported without inspection, to include any germplasm without inspection.
