Question:

Are there any parts missing from my Tilly lamp?

I bought this a while ago at a car boot sale and would rather like to use it. I think that there are some pieces missing though. I understand that the parts can be replaced, but I need to know what needs replacing. I know the mantle is missing, and the rubber seal in the plunger has perished, but what else?

  1. It looks to be complete. So long as you can fix the little pump and pressurize the paraffin you should be ok. There used to be a piece of fine wire supplied to clear the jet if it got blocked. Be gentle with a bit of wire as you can make the hole too big. Also there was a device like a clothes peg with a wad which you soaked with meths and lit under the mantle to get it going. But a few lit matches will still work. A new mantle actually catches fire to be ready for use so don't be alarmed.

Also they get very hot on the top, so beware.

  2. Imagine a clip,. it`s action similar to a clothes peg, consiting of two half circle containers which have a wick material set in, onto which you apply methylated spirit. This arrangment is clipped around the tube just below the glass, and lit, enableing the paraffin to become a gas which is ignited within the mantle

  3. i would be more worried about the fuel container being rusty, it has to work under pressure so first of all see if it can hold it. Any chance it wont then dump it as if that leaks under pressure when alight does not bear thinking about!
