Question:

Are there any passenger railroads that operate in more than a couple of states other than Amtrak?

For example, New Jersey Transit only operates in NY, NJ, and possibly PA. Metro-North is only in NY, NJ, and CT. But are there any other passenger railroads that operate in any more than 3 states? Other than Amtrak of course.

  2. Amtrak is pretty much it.  It certainly is the only national carrier that operates all over the country and I believe that the regional carriers like you mentioned (NJ Transit, SEPTA, MARC, MTA, BART, etc.) only serve a few states at most (some just a local region like BART).

  3. Yep, thats about it.

    The biggest in terms of miles as far as I know is the Alaska RR but it is still in one state.

    And seasonal on most of their routes.
