Question:

Are there any penalties for renewing a license late?

I am from Manitoba, Canada.

My license expired in February.

I have not been driving.

I just need to know if I'm going to be charged or required to retake a written test, or anything of the sort.

I'd like to know before I go in to renew it.

  1. Every state is different but I know when I lived in Mississippi I was one day late for renewing my license and I was charged a dollar.  All I had to do is wait to get my picture retaken, and then wait again for it to print.

Now that I live in Tennessee they tell me I can get my license, but if it expires for more than 6 months I have to retake all the tests:  vision, written, and possibility the road test.  Mine is not expired, just transferring from one state to another.

I am sure there is a fee, but not much, but do act on it quickly.  You might be able to get a signed notary statement that can hold up to why you did not get your renewal, but it might just be cheaper to pay the penality fee.

I had to do one of those statements prior when I did not renew a license plate for a moped, and did so again 2 years later.  It was an affidavit type deal.
