I'm not sure I should be posting this, but Cassis and its surrounding area is unknown to the English,and is far nicer than Nice, Cannes etc. Don't tell anyone else though.

As a brit living in france  I must answer  Inconnaissable's criticism. The reason brits buy houses in villages is because the french have deserted them in droves to live in the cities. Without we brits renovating these houses they will just collapse in ruins & villages will be even more deserted. The french leave because there is no work in the villages & most brits will become self employed to earn a living thus bringing revenue into the hamlets. Just look around and see the completely derelict hamlets where the foriegners have not reached. Its Sad. As to the house price increases it is the Fench who ask the price & the foriegners who pay it. Believe me if I could have paid less for my house I would not have complained. I really enjoy living in france & 99% of french people are superb but I do get upset when all french ills are blamed on immigrants. We are trying to preserve the French way of life more than some French people & most of us try to learn french language & customs.

Well, the english usually occupy small villages, so you need to find a small town or large town, not a small village, take "Paziols" for exemple in extreme southern France, it even has an english website !

There are some places in the South where there are fewer Brits. Get some holiday brochures in the UK (or look in websites) and then figure out which resorts don't appear!

Also, and fairly obviously, anywhere which isn't touristy will have a lot fewer Brits.

However approximately 100,000 Brits live permanently in France, which is about 1 in 600, and that doesn't count holiday-home owners or tourists, so you're really pretty likely to encounter one just about anywhere you hang around for a few days.

South of France full of Brits?.....Ok, but you should see the south of Portugal , the Algarve....Worse !

Try the North of France, or maybe the west coast (bordeaux, bayonne)...?

Bonjour ! yes there are places in the South of France where it's not full of brits ! a few certainly but they adapt very well with the locals and wish to stay discreet !

one point for them is that they restore old houses in a very styled fashion with a lot of taste !

unfortunately, like many retired europeans, they buy houses and only live there a few weeks of the year if at all, which make our villages empty !

hence, the schools have to shut down and then, shops, post office etc..... because there is not enough residents !

and further more, the price of houses has

gone up 30% in the last 2 years !

I know that my friends and people I know are refusing to sell to others europeans, because it makes our villages in danger !

I'm fed up to go through our deserted villages and not hear  kiddies in the empty school yard... or sharing a glass of wine in the local café which has sold out because of lack of customers !

in an other place, you can go in alsace, i'm here from two years, and i've almost never see one

Try big cities - Lyon, Marseille.

Learn French and go into places whre French is spoken - the Brits fall away pretty quickly and you get better food and service. The brits are scared of them.

If you see one, shout "Breeteesh peegs, Go Home!"

That's what I do here in Portugal, another breeding ground for ancient daily mail readers and egg and chips dens.

Try places like Normandy (Trouville, Deauville) or Vendée (Sables d'Olonnes, Ile de Ré) which are beautiful and not yet invaded by brits

I lived in Marseille and I have not met any British people! Caution though that not many people in Marseille speak English :) It is a beautiful city with great ports, the Mediterranean sea, and wild mountains. Plus, you could do day trips to neighboring areas like Cassis and Aix-en-Provence, which are delightful towns.

Unfortunatly us Brits have a little too much spare cash to splash around. I can remember when the entire Med. coast of Spain didnt belong to UK Ltd and also when you could walk around Orlando and hear American accents instead of cockney's. As for France they will always welcome the pound but thankyou in French not english. We have Poles, Indians, Jamacians etc etc in the Uk, the french will just have to put up with us living there.

yes there is it depends what you want i went camping in a small part of britany there was only 3 english families and mostley dutsh and french. when i find where it was again i will wright ur probly lookin in da wrong places.

Yes, you will find fewer visitors in cold, damp and gray regions of France where no one cares about life enjoyment of any sort.

I've yet to run into any such place in the South of France... If I do, I'll be sure to post about it :).

try to go in the west-south, in a city (for example, of course, there r so many other cities !) called Mimizan, it s quite nice, and as far as I know, there r no brits but a lot of deutch...

Yes, but I'm not going to tell you, otherwise I might start an invasion.

I can't understand why people from the UK, who won't buy French apples and can't or won't speak French want to go and live in France.

I speak French and I do buy French apples and I'd love to live in France. For the time being I'm stuck in Switzerland, which is OK but it's not France!

It's like Americans in any country with oil. They just invade on mass take over. At least the Brits leave after 2 weeks.

South of France is a big place !

There are many Brits in Cote d'Azur, Provence and Dordogne (disputed as being truly South).

Languedoc is much more rural and has scattered Brits (as well as Belgians, Dutch, Germans, Swiss and ,worst of all, Parisians). There are no ghettos, but each village has a few foreigners. Some live there all the year round - others have holiday homes.

English is rarely heard in my area.
