an adder, which bears a cross on its skull.

Actually, there is one, the Kreuzotter but even if you would run across one, it would be much more scared of you! And you would have to be hiking in a very rural area as the Taunus mountains and as they are endangered you would be very lucky! I´ve never been lucky enough to come across one yet though so don´t worry :-D

What you can find here but also only with a bit of luck is the garden snake which really isn´t a snake but a lizard without legs so no danger at all!
