Are there any poisonous varieties of apple?

I don't want to know about cyanide in seeds and stuff like that but are there actually any varieties that are genuinly poisonous? I just found an apple tree in my girlfriends garden and out of interest took a bite. It didn't taste bad but clearly wasn't ripe. I would be grateful for any help!

crab apples will give you terrible gut ache. My mum used to tell us to stay away from them as they were poisonous, but I think they're just too acidic for our stomachs. Does that make them poisonous? You can make crab apple jelly from them, so the cooking process must kill whatever's wrong in them.
