I am an 28 year old male who never learned to swim. I am determined to learn to swim. Is there any beginning adult swim classes in the Philadelphia area? Maybe there are some videos and/or books that are available for adults who never learned to swim. When I say I can not swim, I can not float, thread water, or do any type of strokes. I also panic in any water that is above my shoulders. I need help? Thanks

  1. Check your local YMCA.  I know my local YMCA offers adult swim lessons.

  2. Im not from your area but I am certain that there are programs available. You are going to need to conquer your fear of water before you can learn to swim. I suggest going in shallow water that you can stand in. Start out by treading water or possibly floating on your back. As long as you have air in your lungs you can backfloat. Backfloating has saved lives as it is the easiest way to stay afloat. Treat the shallow water as if it were deep water. Basically, try not to touch the bottom. If you can do that in the shallow area and feel confident than you pretty much know how to swim from there. Just be safe and make sure there is someone there to watch you.
