  1. couple of questions for you to start ---1) Do you Read to him?...this is the biggest help and encourages him to read and enjoy doing if he sees others including adults reading both to themselves and to him.

    2) Does he have a variety of reading material avail to him--not just books, magazines, newspapers, and or access to the local library on a regular basis (more than once or twice a month) ?

If the answers to these questions are yes then you are on the right road, if the answer is more often maybe or no then these  are the first items you need to work on.

the types or books you should be encouraging him to read are simple picture books with predicitable consequences with no more than a ten to twenty word count in them. sort of like the old "d**k and Jane" readers. "See Jane, see Jane run"

the types of books you read to him are short chapter books--try e b whites charlottes web, or richard dahls charlie and the chocolate factory. take him to the library to hear reading hour, to choose books, to listen to the audio books and to choose books he is interested in for you to read to him, dont be afraid to ask the librarian for help, if you only use one tactic to help him learn to read is will be bored and loose interest in the subject and then miss out on the best way to entertain oneself there is.

as a last resort maybe try some thing like sylvan or one of the other programs for more assistance...and of course ask his teacher or the reading specialist at his school for more help

  2. How much time do you spend helping me decode words and blend letters? Go to the teacher's store & get some phonics books.

  3. i have no idea you try to teach him

  4. you could try a leap frog program because it works well with reading.

  5. My son is in the second grade as well and has struggled and still is.  First, you need to talk with his teacher to pin point what the problem is.  I'm guessing phonics is a big problem.  They told me that he needed to read about 30 minutes a day.  Get him some books about things he is interested in, that will help a lot.  I also did flash cards with basic everyday words.  I got some different books at Teacher's Delight.  I know they have a website.  So many options, you just have to play around till you find something that helps.  I think it also helps if he connects to his teacher and has a teacher that cares.

  6. Anything dealing with phonics.

  7. Hi there, I know of a program called LetterLand.... Try www.letterland.com . They have heaps of excellent resources and books that will help with phonics, etc.

    Good luck.

  8. yeah u should try hooked on phonics or those little books they sell called leap frog

  9. Yes there are, I am a TA and work with many struggling readers. We use the Orton gillingham approach to teach them how to read and write. He might be a little dyslexic. I can't give you a website at this moment since I have all my material at school. Try web searching and see what you can come up with other wise just e-mail me. I can find out tomorrow.

  10. Hey you could try audio books for children they have the books plus the tape or CD that goes with them so the child can read along also.

Barnes & Noble have them bought some for my 2 year old and she loves them.

  11. I have leap pad for my son, also I have Vsmile they both work great!!  My son is 5 and excels in reading.

I believe leap pad has usb connection so he can use it on the computer and VSmile is like a video game console but helps in reading, they have software for your son's age

  12. Errr...

you can try to teach him how to so call " twist" his tongue when reading.

You can seek a specialist to see if he is alright or not, juz kidding.

  13. just any old book. make sure it has letters. and well, if your kid is young enough then make sure it has pictures too, that helps. you know snoop dogg couldnt read when he first started rapping. are you sure your son isnt a pothead? thats probably why. also you could slap him when he gets something wrong, just dont tell anyone i told you that

  14. LEAPFrog learning system
