  1. Amtrak has many stations in both New York state and New Hampshire.  You can also take a Greyhound bus or Peter Pan bus.

Metro-North does not actually go to New Hampshire, it only goes to CT - though if you meant New Haven, CT, Metro-North would work.

  2. They're all "public" trains - there is Amtrak or Metro North - take your pick. I suggest Metro North.

Metro North http://mta.info/mnr/index.html (Grand Central to New Haven Union Station, commuter seating, lots of trains everyday, inexpensive to travel)

Amtrak http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentSer... (New York Penn to New Haven Union Station - food service, better seats, higher price)

  3. www.amtrak.com

just look for where you want to go in NH

  4. You can't really take an Amtrak train directly from NYC to NH because of the gap between South Station and North Station in Boston.  You can buy a ticket from NYC to NH - you have to transfer to Amtrak's Downeaster service at North Station which is a 5-10 minute taxi ride away from South Station.  You will find all info at http://www.amtrak.com
