Question:

Are there any rabbit / guinea pig toys you can make at home that help relieve boredom?

My rabbits and guinea pigs have to be in a run as local cats (and foxes) will attack them. However, even though they have big runs they look really bored, and one of them has started to dig holes all over my lawn!! He's not digging to escape (i think!) as the holes aren't deep. Are there any toys i can make at home to keep them happy? I used to have a ball with holes in that slowly releases rabbit food but he completely demolished it!

  1. I would just give it my little cats toys little balls with jingles in it but honestly he never played with anything .. he just loved to be out of his cage and hoping around!!

  2. You could put carrots/apples in tp rolls or fill paper bags with hay. Get tubes for them to run in. Rabbits LOVE tubes.

  3. yeah there are quite alot. But wood you have to be really CAREFULL some wood can be posionos for rabbits. So i would just stick to normal wood. Right what i do is get tollit tubes and put some vegtables in it and stuff hay in it. I did that because it was my sisters wedding and i wanted my rabbits to be happy. They were spending hours just eating and playing it was lovely

  4. To be honest you could give your animals just a random peice of wood with an edge and they will chew it (hence it is a bordom breaker)

However in my experience if you give your guinea pig or rabbit sweetcorn (corn on the cob) they will eat it gaining nutricial vlaues and also the animal will enjoy 'playing' with the sweetcorn.

Many seem to enjoy the sound of themselves eating the sweetcorn and ripping it from the cob.

    Hope this helps

  5. i made random shapes out of m.d.f wood, and smoothed off the edges. its a toy to keep them amused, also good for their teeth as the grinding of the wood and teeth keep their teeth a safe length.

  6. They love toilet paper rolls. Also, my rabbit loved to shred paper

  7. Cardboard boxes, toilet roll tubes, stuff tubes and boxes with hay and treats and let them demolish it. Some rabbits are less playful and more destructive, so you can make toys for them that are cheap (or free!) but it doesn't matter if they destroy them. My rabbits love things to climb on. Most fruit tree sticks are also safe to chew.

  9. Well I had a rabbit when I was about 8 years old, and bizarrely he used to play with a toy designed for cats. It was a long stick with a string hanging from the end and a feather on the end of the string, he'd hunch down on his back legs and use his front ones to 'box' the feather. Weird little thing :)

I know that may be an exception and you may have completely normal rabbits and piggies who don't think they're cats, so I found this for you, it might give you a few ideas, good luck! :)
