I don't want it to be expensive.

I'm willing to pay between $150 - $240

I only have 4 rats but I want them to have a little space

  1. A Ferplast Jenny is perfect. It's ideal for up to 5 rats, and it happily homes my four male rats :) Jenny's are easily available within the price range you've suggested and are quite common, so it's likely your pet store will have one or you can buy them online. Jenny's are very good quality and will last for many generations of rat. They are easy to keep clean and can be easily furbished with Ferplast platforms and a variety of ladders, hammocks, shelters  and tubes to make the most of the space. An even larger cage, but equally good quality is the Fop Cavia Hotel.

If you do not decide on either of these cages, make sure whatever cage you buy provides at least 2 cubic feet per rat. If in doubt, pop the measurements into this website to find out the maximum amount of rats it will hold - http://www.rattycorner.com/odds/calc.sht... -

Jenny - (I put another platform in that space under the highest platform, level with the lower one) http://www.petcentreonline.co.uk/ecommer...

    Fop Cavia Hotel - http://www.petcentreonline.co.uk/ecommer...

    Hope this helps!

EDIT: Oh brilliant you're English! Jenny's are about £80-£150 from pet stores, depending on where you get them. You can usually find brand new ones or barely used second hand one on Ebay for around £60. My Jenny was £120 from a private pet store, and then I saw one in a corporate for only £75, so it's definitely worth shopping around!

EDIT: Sorry Shazza, but that hutch is waaay to small for two rats, let alone 4 big males. Rats need lots of space and unlike rabbits, they climb and so need much higher cages than that. The bar spacing also look too large for rats, they could probably escape from that.

  2. get a hutch and a run.... my sister kept her rat in a ferret hutch and just let it out to run around the room in the evenings. you could get a run for it too....... she kept it in her living room and decorated it to look nice but obviously if you don't want it in there you could have in in a spare room then use the run during the day for them..... look at big pet store..... in the uk we have pets at home that sell large rat cages n hutches so im sure you will have something similar.

here is a link to what we have..... this is for rabbits but im sure it would be fine for rats too!!!!

  3. i am a rat breeder and i recommend a bird flight cage, you can find one on wheels, the bars are close enough together, and it is a good size cage, and since rats like to climb you can put toys all over the walls. just go to a bird store and look at all the cages.

  4. Check at martin's cages.  http://www.martinscages.com  They have a whole section on rat cages, you will want a larger cage, if you have a couple of hundred dollars plus shipping you could get the RUUD cage.  Make sure you pay for powder coating.  It will last much longer than without, and is much safer for the ratties.  I am a hobby breeder and only use martin's cages for my mischief cages.  They are perfectly sized, and easy to clean, and great for hammocks and tubes and toys!

I don't know their shipping policies for overseas, though.  You will need to check that out.

  5. The IMAC rat cage holds 5 rats, look online for it I'm sure someone will be selling them somewhere. Over here they're for sale at £80 - £100 so i think that's roughly 160 - 200 $.

  6. A single module Ferret Nation cage is big enough for 5 rats (each module has a ramp and a second story). The two module cage (FN 142) is in your price range (it runs about $200) and would really give them room to spread out. It is easy to clean and will last forever. It is the best cage out there for rats. You could add a third module later if you wanted to expand and you can block the access between the modules if you ever need or want to separate rats.

I have a triple module - about 7 feet tall, and have my 4 girls in 2 modules and the guinea pigs in the third. The pig's module is blocked off but you can set the modules up to be contiguous so even though I am referring to modules, it functions as one big cage.

This is a video showing the assembly and should give you a better idea of the size of the cage and construction. The photo on the website is not that great for visualizing it. That is not me in the video.

P.S. Sorry but that hutch is nowhere near large enough for 5 rats and the bars are spaced too widely to keep them in.
