Question:

Are there any restrictions for export maple syrup to the USA from Canada?

I am a maple syrup distributor in Ontario for my brother's maple syrup operation based in Quebec. I am researching and looking for info regarding any restrictions that there may be about maple syrup crossing the border. Since it is a food product, I am wondering if there are any special permits or anything I should get. I only have single individuals to send to and none is likely going to grow in anything large scale or involving large shipments.

Any info or tips will be appreciated.

Thank you all.

  1. No as long as youre not shipping it in bulk but even then it's not so much the restrictions but the paper work for customs.

    First off

If youre shipping to the US youll need a commercial invoice, nafta certificate,FDA certificate, and it the value is more than say 1800 canadian you'll need a B-13.Now dont forget to fill in every single possible box cause customs will fine you if you've left an important one empty.Dont forget if your business is registered you have a GST # and that # must be on the B-13 as well or else big fine again.

If you have any questions you can email me and Ill do my best to send you off in the right direction.

  2. I live in the US and have bought canadian maple syrup many times. What can I say its good stuff.  have bought it from both large chains and independent stores. I have also crossed the canadian border and their main concern was if you had fresh produce, not anything that had been boxed or already cooked.

  3. There are no restrictions on exporting it from Canada.

The contents of each shipment must be properly declared, or  US customs will stop the shipment at the Border and it may be destroyed.

Otherwise it will simply clear and be delivered.

Be sure to  supply a copy of your invoice for Customs use, along with the shipment.

US Customs like to have advance notice on foodstuffs being sent into USA so it will help you if you use a carrier that will do the notification for you and then send the shipment .

I know FedEx  can do this as I did it with them two weeks ago.

The shipment was delivered right away, with no extra charge or fee of any kind added on.

You can specify ground service instead of air for lower cost.

UPS might do the same, but my experience has been that they invariably add on extra charges and fees.
