  1. D&D and all the other classic RPGs were around long before personal computers. There is one for just about any genre you can think of:

    Fantasy - D&D

SciFi - Traveler, various 'name'-based (Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate)

    Modern - Twilight 2000

Horror - Call of Cthuhlu, World of Darkness

    Mixed - Rifts, Gurps, Cyberpunk

Wierd - Bunnies and Burrows, Hackmaster

  2. There are TONS of them!  D&D (of course), BattleMech, Lord of the Rings RPG, Star Wars, YARPS, Chainmail, Twilight 2000, etc., etc., etc.

For a change of pace, there's a very detailed one, called HarnWorld.  Lots of fun, and put out by Columbia Games.

There are lots of non-RPG games that require pencil and paper.  One I recently discovered is called Close Action by Clash of Arms.

Finally, you may want to do a search on Pencil and Paper RPG.  That's what you're referring to.

  3. Dungeons and Dragons is the most well known RPG, and really the father of the entire RPG concept. Now's a great time to pick up the hobby, since the new 4th edition rules come out this week. If you're looking for high-action, sword and sorcery fantasy, D&D is definately the way to go. Checck www.wizards.com for more info.

If you like science fiction or horror, or some other genre, there are plenty of roleplaying games available for those kinds of settings too. The World of Darkness covers werewolves, vampires, etc.

A good starting place for general pen & paper RPG knowledge is www.enworld.org, or www.rpg.net.

Both of those forums have plenty to offer a new player, and people there can steer you towards the right game for you, and even help you find other players in your area to game with.

  4. Best-known probably is Dungeons & Dragons.

  5. Definitely D&D.  When I was in college, we even had a group that played in the tunnels underneath the university.  They had an entire fantasy world set up down there.
