Are there any rough neighborhoods in San Diego?

According to all sources, (people, answers, sites) San Diego is a beautiful, low crime, sunny, warm all year round, and hardly polluted city. Probably one of the most desireable places to live in the country, if not the very most desireable. Are there any rough neighborhoods, though, districts or towns that should be avoided near or within San Diego?

  1. of course. all the places the other answers listed are true, but possibly chula vista too. it isnt that bad but i wouldnt go around walking at night even with a friend because that place is pretty ghetto. grew up there though, i'm used to it. tagging all over the sidewalks and everything..

  2. Carlsbad and north county are not typically rough, but like many of the other answers said, southeast san diego and less wealthy neighborhoods close to downtown are pretty rough.

  3. my friends tell me there is and i think they are right

  4. A lot of cities near downtown san diego [ logan heights, university heights... ] and in national city and chula vista, anywhere near the boarder mainly... but quite a few places here are pretty bad.

    I live in East County. Santee the "white" ghetto. Next town over, there's a pink ghetto. dont ask. I knew a Few people that have been killed, a few of them were in high school, lots of fights at parties, vandalism, a lady got killed a few weeks ago, i just heard someone scream "F%@K OFF!!" to someone about an hour ago, el cajob blvd, in el cajon SUPER scary a lady got murdered  when i was picking someone up from work,

  5. Yes, most all are South of the 94 freeway and East of the 805

    Skyline;

    Lincoln Park;

    Valencia Park;

    City Heights

  6. there are lots of "rougher" areas, but nothing so bad.

    There are many places that are ok in the day, but i would avoid at night.

    There is however a bias. People from North San Diego think that Southern San Diego is trashy and vice versa.

    North San Diego's Oceanside, Carlsbad and Escondido can be rough.

    well. not really carlsbad.

    I think some people who say the closer you get to the border the worse the neighborhoods may have slight prejudice, if not they are full blown racists.

    Chula Vista is a really quiet little city. Eastlake is a very upscale and family oriented place and Bonita is very nice.

    Bottom line, no place anywhere is completely safe. My friend lived in La Jolla (considered the best part of san diego) he was robbed and had his jaw broken at an ATM 3 blocks from his house by  LOCAL teenagers.

  7. San Diego is very pretty but you can see High class to low class in the city. Lots of areas are ghetto espeically the places the other person listed skyline etc. I wouldn't call Chula Vista ghetto. There are much worse places. Tagging is all over that dosen't equal ghetto. Chula Vista is a working neighborhood with middle income families and they have good schools in the area. If you live there and you want to believe you live in da hood that's fine but in reality it's not. El cajon and Santee can be much more ghetto and trashy.

  8. YES!!!! The fact is that all major ,and even the smallest of towns have rough hoods in them.The balance of good and evil is everywhere.

  9. of course. there are always places that are dangerous within cities. There is Logan Heights which is high in crime and "ghetto." San Ysidro in the south bay can be dangerous because it is so close to the border. it is a beautiful city and lovely houses but can be risky.

  10. Yeah, southeast San Diego isn't that nice. Even though I heard somewhere that people are trying to get everyone to call it "New Horizons" instead of southeast San Diego because it's the "rough" part.
