I am looking at buying some and one of the websites I went on suggested there are regs about what you can and can't have and that they are different rules for union and league. However, nobody else mentions it. Any general ideas on works and what doesn't for wingers ?

  1. played for four years one at wing, one at oc and two at scummy. I always wore a scrum cap they are hot but they keep your head on straight and ears on your head. never wore pads but they could never hurt. never forget the mouthguard. good luck. best sport ever after hockey

  2. Scull caps are not for wingers............they blind your  blind side if you get my meaning...........in other words, you have to turn your head, not your eyes,  if you need to pass when wearing one of these!

  3. I think its only allowed to be a Certain thickness ?!?!?!

but im not sure what the limit is !!! Sorry !!

You could try the IRB site ????

  4. You don't have to wear body protection in Rugby, but there are many protection gear you can get such as gum shields, skull caps, i recommend you to wear at least one gum shield.

  5. Yes there are rules. Like no metal accept your studs. No hard plastic on the the body and so on.

  6. Every rugby player should have a gum shield.

If you're worried about bashing your head then get a scrum cap, they may be expensive but well worth it.

If you think that having some shoulders pads would give you more confidence in the tackle area, then get some of them, but as a wing I'm not really sure if you need them.

I believe there are rules and regulations for pads. They have to be given the IRB kite mark which means that they are safe to use and suitable for rugby. Certain 'shoulder' pads come with upper arm, upper back and chest pads too but my knowledge on whether these are allowed or not is a bit vague. I do know that many internationals wear them but without the chest pad.

    Hope that was useful?

  7. ive bin playing rugby for 5 year now and i play as flanker, the wingers generally wear gum sheild, box and body armor which you can buy dead cheap its lycra with pads on the abdominals and shoulders here a link for barrington sports who sell it for a reasonable price.

  8. Yes, they do.

Simply "Players may wear shoulder padding and headgear which bear the IRB Approval Mark (IRB Regulation 12)"

Here's a full list of IRB approved gear

    http://www.irb.com/lawregulations/approv...

There's no need for a "box" I've never heard of anyone playing rugby in one of those, so forget about that.

A gumshield is essential where ever you play on the pitch.

Shoulder pads are a good idea. It's not American footbal so don't expect then to protect you like that. They just stop the odd knock that'll slow you down towards the end of the game.

Head gear is getting much better these days and will stop head knocks from stopping you playing now and then

  9. NO BUT IF I WERE YOU ID WEAR A GUM SHIELD AND A BOX ON THE GROIN JUST TO BE SAFE

  10. You have to get acceptance by your local rugby body. Speak to your coach about rules and regualtions, all safety equipment is regulated and some need prior approval before usage.

  11. Obviously head gear and mouth pieces are allowed but padding is also worn to protect the players shoulders in the tackle.  However, the official rules state;

'shoulder padding will cover the shoulder and collar bone only and extend from the neck to a maximum of 2 cm down the upper arm'

Padding for the chest and biceps are forbidden but are permitted in Rugby League.
