I know of a very smart 7 years old little girl, I wish I can find her a good school or program to fully realize her potencial. It will be a shame not to. It should be a crime not to.

  1. We did not have many school options where we live.  We decided to homeschool and it has definitely been the right decision.  Check out www.hoagiesgifted.org and www.ditd.org for resources and links to potential schools.  Good luck on your research.

  2. Yes, there are, depending on where you live.  What area are you in?

At that age, most public schools offer G/T pull-out programs (an hour or two once a week) rather than G/T full programs.  You may really have to look to a private school to find a true elementary G/T program...that's what we did when our son was younger.  The entire school was a G/T program, with students individually matched to teachers that were highly trained in working with gifted kids.

If there is no school in your area that can meet her needs, she can be homeschooled.  My son is highly gifted, and after being in a school with a great G/T program we moved to an area where there is none to speak of...so we homeschool.  Public school administrators and teachers in our area, as well as some private school teachers, have advised us that we're doing the best thing for him, as there really aren't any schools in our area that can meet his needs.

Edit - we moved from northern Orange County, if you're anywhere in southern LA you may want to check out Fairmont Private School.  That's where my son attended, and it's excellent.  I knew many families from areas around the Cerritos area, and some in LA, that attended there - as well as families down near Laguna and Dana Point.  The one he went to was in Anaheim, they have them scattered throughout northern OC.  The campuses in Anaheim are right off the 5 and/or 91 between Lincoln (La Palma? It's been a few years) and Harbor exits, pretty easy to get to.

My son absolutely adored it there, if we lived there now he'd still be enrolled (started at 3.5, now 10.5).

    Hope that helps!

  3. You are in luck because one of the few schools in the world that is exclusively for highly gifted children is in LA. It's the Mirman School on Mulholland in Bel Air, & it's awesome.

To qualify as being highly gifted you have to have an IQ of 145 or above. If she is gifted (over 130) but not quite at that mark, then look into the gifted programs the LAUSD offers. I know there's an elementary school in Westwood that has one.

    Best of luck. : )

  4. Try Montessori schools.

  5. Most public schools offer gifted classes, but some aren't really that good, and most don't start until 3rd or 4th grade. I'm sure if you did some reaserch you'd find some, but I don't know.
