Are there any scuba-divers on here? Where are some places you have dived?

I have always wanted to dive in Australia, the Great Barrier Reef, but never got around to it yet, probably will soon.

What are some of the places you made your dives and what did you find?

How long have you been diving and did you learn scuba-diving on your own or taught by the Navy?

  1. I have dived in Australian waters, including off the great barrier reef at a place called great keppel island. Good vis is what I remember most. Have dived in some places in south east asia, on a couple of wrecks. Also in Europe, Cuba and South Africa.

I've been diving since '88, so nearly 20 years. Was taught by the military on what are called assault swimmer courses ( I was in the British and Australian armies), but most of our underwater work was conducted at 30 feet or less. I was also lucky enough to attend a BUDS course conducted by the US Navy during my time. The Army throws you a PADI qualification at the end of your first course and most of us would use these civilian qualifications to hire kit when we were on leave somewhere. Later I became a PADI instructor.

  2. I've dived Scapa Flow, Singapore, Hawaii, Belize, Honduras, Cozumel, Nova Scotia and locally in the Great lakes. Mostly wrecks, since history is a fav of mine.

I'm curious. Are you North American? If so, did you know that the second largest barrier reef in the world is south of you in Belize? A heck of a lot cheaper than flying half way around the world if it's just the reef you're interested in and not Australia as a whole.

How long diving now? I started 20 years ago, when there were no pics on C cards and you could use anyone's card to get a fill and was given a "course" by a pal. I don't recommend anyone doing it that way and it's because of stupid things like that, they have made it nigh impossible to get in the water these days without proper dive creds. Which is good, I was daft and it was the "wild west" back then. I've been properly certified by a few agencies for the last 15 years and diving "legal". A commercial diver for the last 10 which I'm about to retire from active diving status. I was in the Navy, but only as a signalman. No diving for them. I'd started out as just normal recreational diver ( still dive for fun, it never gets boring) and decided to make a career out of it. And hey...I got to write off my gear costs as a business expense!!! :)

  3. I haven't been anywhere cool since I don't have any money. I got my first certification in Lake Mead, though. They have a cement factory at 70 feet that's kind of fun to explore. I'm a rescue diver...I got my first cert. 10 years ago. I'm PADI...so I got it on my own.

  4. i haven't been certified yet, but i did a discover scuba class and went to a quarry earlier this july. i'm going to take the real certification class in march, and in the next few years i plan on doing some around-wreck dives in the outer banks nc and some dives in alexander and rainbow springs, fl
