Question:

Are there any semi-auto handguns that shoot .357 magnum rounds besides the Desert Eagle?

Not .357 Sig., but good ol' .357 mag.

The Desert Eagle model XIX is the only one I've ever seen online or in a catalogue.

Does anyone else make any semi-autos like that?

What about REALLy big bore semi-autos, that shoot .44 mag, say, besides that other Desert Eagle model?

Is there something about the big loads that make them unsuitable for a semi-auto handgun? I know Ruger makes BIG bore revolvers like the Redhawk Alaskan (shoots a 454 Casull - a bear REVOLVER!).

But does anyone else make any real semi-auto hand cannons besides Magnum Research's Desert Eagles?

If not, is it just because there isn't that big a market for them, or is there a technical problem that only Magnum Research has figured out how to beat? (Or HAVE they beaten it? Can anyone tell me anything about Desert Eagles' quality and function?)

  1. I've occasionally seen one up for auction, but I would steer clear of this action. Revolvers Jam less often than Bill and Hillary spend time together off-camera. Couple this with the availability of speed-loaders and the search seems hardly worth the trouble (and $$$)

The .454 casull creates such High pressures that the weight of an auto that could handle it would render the piece impractical. Some rifles don't weigh as much as a DE. Besides, if you can't get the job done in 6 rounds than you have a problem with aiming, not capacity.

  2. The 9mm. parabellum is equivalent to the .357.

That's why they made the .357, to match the 'nine' in a revolver.

If you want a match for the .44 Mag, try the 10mm.

In general, auto-loaders don't like rimmed cartridges.

That 10mm. can be loaded as hot as any normal shooter needs, (not '.454` level, but close enough)..

  3. My father talked about a Coonan .357 Magnum semi-automatic pistol made before my time. There was another one too, but I can't recall the name of it. It may be LAR Grizzly, but I'm not sure. You might find used ones, because they aren't made now. They use the regular .357 Magnum revolver loads. Rimmed revolver shells cause problems in functioning in semi-automatics.

  4. The 10mm in full power loads is more powerful than the .357 mag., and can be found in combat sized semi-auto handguns like the Glock 20, Tangfolio Witness, Dan Wesson Razorback, and Colt Delta Elite.

  5. Well, there is the .357 Auto Mag but I don't think it is in produiction any longer.

  6. Coonan arms makes something like that in a modified 1911 frame:
