The latest research demonstrates that modern Ortho K is safe when the lenses are fitted correctly. The lenses are made from high oxygen permeable materials designed to allow overnight wear, but because the lens is worn in the closed eye environment, it is very important that you stick to good hygiene when handling your lenses to avoid infections . The worst case scenario is an infection that causes a permanent reduction in vision - fortunately this is rare. Resent research indicates that the majority of complications are caused by dirty cases, incorrect use of disinfecting systems and the dangerous practice of soaking the lenses in plain tap water or saline. As with all contact lenses, proper attention must be paid to hygiene and lens maintenance to ensure eye health. Ortho-K is no different.

Also please note that the FDA has approved certain materials which can be used for overnight wear with conventional contact lenses but has not approved the use of these materials for overnight ortho-K.  FDA has only approved them for daytime ortho-K. However, since overnight wear ortho-K has been practiced safely for 15 years, and since the same materials used in conventional contact lenses for overnight wear are used for ortho-K applications, it should be safe to sleep wearing ortho-K lenses as the lenses have a very high oxygen transmissibility, which is more than adequate. Currently, FDA requires that eye care professionals be trained and certified before using overnight Ortho-K lenses in their practice. You should ask your eye care professional about what lenses he or she is certified to fit if you are considering this procedure.
