Are there any simple tests I can do at home to find out whether a bottle of olive oil is pure or not?

i hear Olive oil companies in Italy are adding cheap oils like canola oil into their "100% extra virgin olive oil." Does anyone know any tests to find out whether a bottle is pure? Or does anyone know any legit brands? I've been using Bertolli for a long time and just discovered that they dilute their olive oil...

  1. according to america's test kitchen the best olive oil is "columela" (costs $17.95 per 17 oz.) followed by "lucini italia" (costs $19.99 per 500ml) and "colavita" ($ 17.99 per 750ml) Usually the best one's have a very fruity smell and taste to it.

  2. Not unless your home has a chemistry lab complete with centrifuge, but the taste and smell test should work. If you have an oil lamp, the contaminated stuff will burn differently too.

  3. The best olive oil you can buy is from Canino in Italy. Anything added to their olive oil would immediately be noticed as it would alter the flavour. The town of Canino pride themselves on the olive oil that comes from their region. It is the most amazing flavoured olive oil. I live in a great olive oil growing region of Spain, but it is nothing like Canino.

  4. If you learned what to look for you could probably tell by taste and smell.
