  1. Genealogy.com or Ancestry.com are good sites to use, but they charge membership fees.  I believe you can register for a "free trial membership," though.  I recommend doing this, but make sure to cancel the free trail membership within 30 days so they don't charge your credit card for a regular membership after the trial has expired.

    Also, once you find names you can check the census records.

    It's free for a short trial period then you have to pay for it.  It is the best site online. In order to use it, you have to know your grandparent's birth names and the date and place of their birth.  You work your way back from there.
