Are there any small stores in maryland that take 13 year olds to work?

dont know about maryland but most places in order to get a recieved taxed check one must be 15 first, try a local yard company willing to pay you cash instead of check

No state allows 13 year olds to get a work permit.  And no store is going to hire anyone so young.  

If you need to earn money, look to doing things for neighbors such as babysitting, lawn mowing, gardening, "mother's helper" (help with child care and housecleaning under the mother's supervision), do walking, etc.  If you have any special skills (you're a great little guitarist and can teach a younger child, you design nifty websites, make jewelry, knit interesting scarves & hats for sale, etc), capitalize on that.  Also, some areas still have newspaper routes for kids aged 12 and up as opposed to those who have switched to adults with cars for delivery.

Depending on the state you're in you can apply for a work permit with your parent/guardians permission and may depend on your gpa, but I believe the minimum age is 15 to apply. Check with your school, they usually have applications.
