Are there any special breathing drills in Swimming?

As I understand, one has to breathe in from the mouth and breathe out from the mouth and nose underwater till most of the air is gone and take in the breathe again. Our local coach says that one should try to breathe out all the air as slowly as possible to improve the breathing process as a bubbling exercise. Are there any other breathing drills inside the pool? Does any breathing exercise outside the pool like yogic pranayam improve breathing in the pool?Any suggestions to improve breathing in the pool would be appreciated.

  1. you can try doing underwaters fly kick to the other sid of the pool. we usaully do 5 a day to help us with breath control.Or you can by a snorkel and train with that that makes ur lungs work harder therefor they get bigger and u wont need as much oxygen in races.


  2. Since you know how to breathe practice holding your breath for longer. Maybe swim a length without breathing or other such exercises. On land just hold your breath for as long as possible, you need strong lungs.

    Btw. you can look up swimming lung building exercises on google or other such websites, I am sure they will help.
