  1. All women who could become pregnant should follow Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide for a healthy, well-balanced diet.

Good dietary sources of folate include:

Cooked dried beans, peas, and lentils

Asparagus, spinach, green soybeans, broccoli, avocado, romaine lettuce, beets, Brussels sprouts, green peas, gai-lan, bok choy, and corn

    Orange juice and oranges

Enriched grain products like pasta, bread, and cold breakfast cereals

Wheat germ, sunflower seeds, and peanuts

Note: Although liver is high in folate, pregnant women should limit the consumption of liver due to its high vitamin A content.

  2. Of course you need your basic vitamins but especially folic acid and B vitamins in early pregnancy.  Making sure you get the recommended amounts in the first 3 months of pregnancy cuts the risk of your baby having a cleft palate/lip by almost 70%.

  3. There are quite a few - Liver, beans, egg yolks, soy, potatoes, lentils, peas, spinach.  Here is a link that lists quite a few foods -
