Are there any specific types of work experience that can be done if I want to study English lit. at uni?

You could teach English abroad.  I know it's not very closely linked to what you want to do but there's lots of work out there and lots of opportunities to see the world.

I mentioned that I did a week's work experience at a publishing firm because it was relevant and I linked it into my personal statement, but I wouldn't worry too much. For a subject like English you don't really need any types of work experience, you'd be better off writing about texts in your personal statement.
