  2. I'm not a speech teacher but I have been a member of Toastmasters International and my son is a member of Gavel Club (Jr. Toastmasters).

The Toastmasters site has a lot of material and ideas.

One thing that I think is very important is to try and create a "safe" and supportive environment.

Look under free resources link at the top...

The way Gavel Club works - each meeting students are awarded Best Speaker, Risk Taker and Most Improved.  These are voted on by the students.

Also at each meeting, every student has to respond impromptu to a "table topic."  This is a question (different for each student) based on a specific topic.  The students get a couple of minutes and build their extemporaneous speaking skills - thinking on their feet.

Gavel club also has a "word of the day" and students are expected to incorporate the word of the day into their table topic responses.

Another thing to do is to count (assign a different student each time) the uhs and ahs (etc)... Perhaps have a reward for predefined level of improvement (reduction in filler words).

Get your hands on some video taped speeches that shows good speeches and terrible speeches.  Show them and discuss them.

A great way for a student to learn and improve is to have their speeches video taped.  If you can swing it, video tape the speeches (at least one during the year) so the student can review it.

Look for speaking contests that you might encourage some of your best / most promising speakers to enter.  The VFW runs an annual speaking contest - local to regional to state to national.  Scholarship money for winners.

    Fun class to teach!

    Hope this helps a bit.
