Are there any sports like blitzball?

Blitzball is from a game called final fantasy x, people will know what im talking about. But i want to know if there are any sports out there that are like the actual thing? Does anyoe know where square enix/soft at the time got their inspiration for the game?

They got the idea from separate peace the novel. In the book the main characters friend invents the sport and names it after blitkreig, a type of German raid during World War II. They eventually decide on the name blitzball.
