Question:

Are there any statues that honor women in your city?

I just read an interesting article in our local newspaper that pointed out the lack of statues honoring women. According to the article, there are at least 7 statues of men with their full name and a full description of what did. There are, actually, 6 "artsy" statues of women - but all of these women are totally anonymous - and naked. This really tweaks my equal-rights nerve.

So, how is it in your city? Is it modern and socially aware enough to offer some decent statues of women?

  1. "Equal-rights" (gender) is simply an abstract idealism void of all corporeal or logical indication.  I.e.- when women become "equal" then and only then should they have equal rights.

Children don't have equal rights, why is this any different?

  2. i am from nuneaton in england originally. that is the birthplace of the writer George Eliot whose real name was Mary Ann Evans. she wrote many books and some have been made into films. she had to call herself by a mans name cause women werent taken seriously

there is a statue of her in the middle of  the town, the school and the hospital are named after her and there is a musuem in her honour.

  3. I live in Manchester, England and we have one of Queen Victoria in the city center, here is a pic.

Edit haha the sun never sets on Queen vic :-D

edit@asker there aren't any statues of men or women like what you descibe in my city so I wouldn't worry about it, maybe they just don't make statues for people like that.

  4. what have women done for the whole world? those men are there because they did something to make the world better.

if women want statues of them they better start thinking of ways to help everybody and not just themselves or their kind.

no there is not a statue of a women in my city, and there will never be one.

  5. Hey, good question.

    There’s not many in London!

Edith Cavell (St. Martin’s Place, near Trafalgar Square) – British World War I nurse and humanitarian who helped hundreds of Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium and was executed by the Germans.

    Margaret Thatcher (Palace of Westminster)

    Queen Victoria (Buckingham Palace)

    Boudicea (Westminster Bridge)

    Emmeline Pankhurst (Victoria Tower Gardens)

    Queen Anne (St. Paul’s Cathedral)

Women of World War II (Whitehall)

Unknown African-Caribbean woman with baby (Stockwell Gardens) – first statue of a black woman in England to be on public display, a memorial to Caribbean women

    Temporary statue:

Alison Lapper (Trafalgar Square, 2005 - 2007) – English artist born without arms due to the congenital disorder phocomelia

Probably a few more, but I can’t remember seeing any others or find any other references.

  6. No - because women haven't contributed anything meaningful to my city other than run up credit card bills.................

  7. We do have some I try and find them. We give them nicknames.

  8. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3078/2605...

There's this one on top of the Board of trade here in Chicago, but I don't know who she's supposed to be.

  9. here in the philippines we have loads of statues that honor women.. one example, here in the city where i live theres a huge statue of Melchora Aquino (she helped fought for indepence ) her statue is located on the grounds of the Capitol Building. Its a statue of her holding a little boy and a little girls hand.

  10. We don't have any statues in my town. We have an anchor, if that counts for anything.

The next closest town that would have statues is Boston. I have to say, given the history, there are tons and tons of male statues. There must be some woman ones, but none come to mind. Although there are probably more ducks, horse, bulls, Native Americans and baseball figures than woman combined.

  11. There's a statue of Eleanor Roosevelt not too far from me.

  12. No, but really, and setting aside feminism, how many great woman from the past exist worthy of a statue when statues were created?  I'm sure there are some, but, my point is stautues dedicated to individuals are not modernest, and as such, would be dedicated more to men, for, men created social and political history, taht's all.

  13. depends...if u had a general who fought off an invading army from your town...and a women who made the best bread in the town...whos statue do you think deserves to be there

its all about that really...if there were men that did more important things they deserve it...if there were women that did more important things they deserve it

but let me ask you this...how many famous female war heroes are there?? how many famous female scientists are there compared to men

dont get me wrong if a women does somthing that really makes her stand out i think she should be recognised for it....but just because you want a statue because the rest are all mens doesnt mean ur entitled to one

"just cause you want gold at the olympics, doesnt mean you should get it unless you work for it"

hey its wars that men have died for that gave you freedom you enjoy today...how dare you sully thier sacrifice saying you should get a ******* statue for raising a family and nurturing them...while some guy fights for his country and gets half his body blown off....you dont have the right to say anything about that

  14. nope...but there should be

  15. Yes, there are many. In every Roman Catholic Church, there is a statue of the Virgin Mary who Catholics revere.

  16. You might argue that there was a patriarchal conspiracy to hold women back but that wouldn't change the likelihood that more men have played more prominent roles and done noteworthy things than women throughout the history of most local areas. As more women do more notable things they will get more statues e.g. http://www.parliament.uk/what_s_on/exhib...

  17. EDIT 5: Check this out ~ they reckon Queen Vic definitely IS the most statued! The second link has heaps of pics!

EDIT 4: Haha johnno, that's funny, I've been doing that too! I have found heaps of statues of her just in Sydney, it's like everyone wanted to put up a statue of her! She could be the most statued person in history, seems like every town has at least ONE statue to her, some have heaps.

    ~*~*~*~

EDIT 3: Doom Diva, it's Ceres, the goddess of agriculture. The building is apparently a world famous art deco building, too. Nice choice!

Apparently there are also two other statues at that building which are well known, because they were 'mislaid' for many years and have been cleaned and put back in place.

EDIT 2: There's another one ~ ALSO of Queen Victoria (talk about poular!), this one she is standing up:

    ~*~*~*~*~

EDIT: Johnno ~ your statue of Queen Victoria is really a LOT like our statue of Queen Victoria!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:QVatQ...

    ~*~*~*~*~

One of the central areas of my city is dominated by the four times life size statue of Queen Victoria, although elsewhere statues to famous women are few and far between.

But don't lose heart ~ a statue is fine, but knowing you changed people's hearts and minds ~ and the world ~ for the better is probably a fairly decent legacy, too.

    Cheers :-)
